| Hallo Yogi's, Yogini's, Interested Readers - Friends! |
 |
As this is my first article, I would like to introduce myself.
My name is Rachel, and I am a Bikram Yoga Teacher. Bikram Yoga is a 90minute class, consisting of 26 postures and two breathing exercises. Students enjoy sweating and detoxifying in a room heated to 40 degrees Celsius.
It is a style of yoga for everybody and every body, regardless of what condition the student is in. |

I became a yoga teacher in 2009, after practicing Bikram Yoga for three years. My initial reaction to the class was not positive - this may have something to do with the fact I turned up to practice in tracksuit pants. I had no concentration or patience, and was extremely inflexible.
This combination of mental and physical defeat encouraged my ego to decide this exercise or movement was not for me. However, I found myself back in the room and I steadily started enjoying the discipline, satisfaction, and strength I was finding within myself after each class.
I became aware I was carrying out my day with more ease and joy, I was physically and emotionally more vital, psychologically centered, and my ability or desire to love expanded. In other words, I realised I believed very passionately in Yoga. I wanted to share this passion and encourage others to also live with more enjoyment in their lives, through the understanding and practice of yoga.
I knew the most popular kind of yoga was Hatha Yoga. It is also perhaps the kind of yoga people relate to easiest, before they open their mind to other kinds like Bhakti Yoga, Karma Yoga and Laya Yoga. In my article next week, I will discuss the different kinds of yoga in more depth. I decided in order to encourage the benefits of yoga to a greater population I would be a Hatha Yoga Teacher.
My life at the moment is fabulous. I don’t see it ever being anything but fabulous either. Practicing and teaching yoga every day, eating healthy food, and sharing in many good times with friends is keeping my inner Rachel vibrant, vivacious, energetic, generous, loving and free. |

I try and bring this inner glory to my classes to better engage with all the students in my yoga classes. I believe if at least one door is open, there is a good chance another will – no matter how many pad locks are keeping it shut. You can start small and be tactful, appealing to the different interests, beliefs, abilities or persona of the students.
For example, some of my athletic students initially may be more interested in how the yoga postures can increase flexibility, strengthen muscles, ligaments, and tendons, as well as improve the postures.
This might be in comparison to a highly anxious and stressed businessman under high pressure at work who craves a yoga class for the positive outlook and energy level they will leave with after they leave. If you try with 100 percent precision, intention and frequency at each of your yoga postures and classes, you will receive 100 percent of the benefits. The benefits will be what your body needs.
I know this article was fairly general but it is important for me to introduce myself first. I am really excited about this segment and look forward to sharing with you all what I know about Yoga.
