| It Has Begun |

It has been a week since going vegan and so far so good. I started this change by reading up on the starter kits veganera.com offers along with an email conversation with Mandy (mandy@veganera.com), both I found to be vital readings for making the change. During this week I realised some things I was doing wrong - I was stuck in the frame of mind that I was on a diet, cutting out foods in order to lose weight, as us girls like to do. |

But that was my downfall, as I’m not on a diet, this is a lifestyle change. In the beginning I was eating very little and making foods I would on a diet and avoiding things like bread and a proper dinner. Once I started to think straight and reread the information I had, I went straight out and bought a bag of chips (from the list in one of the starter kits).
I then had a toasted sandwich for lunch and an awesome pumpkin and sweet potato cous cous for dinner (instructions were on the cous cous box). I don’t have to sacrifice much and all the meals I have enjoyed in the past I can still have, just without the meat.
I’m not putting too much pressure on myself so I’m taking it slowly. Last week I had one meat meal and one slice of dairy cheese, but I know myself and if I deny it all at once I will fail so I’m not going to cry over spilt milk (soy of course). It’s a new week and I’m feeling even better about my choice. My groceries are cheaper and have lasted longer and my boyfriend, who doesn’t even know what’s going on, thinks that all these veg meals are the greatest thing since sliced bread (he loves pumpkin) and hasn’t even noticed that he hasn’t been fed meat or dairy for a week! |

It’s funny actually. I’ve also noticed, and I don’t know if it’s all in my head, but I haven’t been as negative and grumpy all the time which, at the moment, I can only thank my new lifestyle for (and the fact that I was grumpy after that one meat meal I had last week). Sounds funny huh...
My advice to anyone who is thinking of giving veg or vegan a go is;
- Buy all fresh fruit and veg - that way you’re forced to use it rather than getting take- out or defrosting a pre-packaged meal. And buy the expensive fruits you love because you’re saving so much on not buying meat!
- Plan your meals for the week.
- At dinner time just think about it for a minute and I’m sure you will realise that most meals can be made meat and dairy free – don’t be so stubborn!
- Buy Vitasoy milk (I find it’s not as nutty tasting as so-good) and the long life version will save you heaps for when you run out – the corner shop can be expensive for soy milk. I actually like the vita soy chickpea milk because it’s creamy.
- You don’t have to make a fuss around others either, you can still enjoy the usual things everyone else does like chips, wine and dips. Being vegan doesn’t mean you now have to walk around wearing tie-dye clothes and never brush your hair.
