Hallo Readers; I had dinner with an environmental scientist last |
weekend....let's call her Nancy....Nancy cooked me the most wonderful vegan soup as she talked passionately about her environmental protection programs she has been putting in place with other government organisations. She has been working with councils when they build new roads to ensure that the big companies consider the impact they have on wildlife and work around ways they can ensure the safety of the animal habitats. |
Nancy was very worried about the animals of Australia, she had a vast knowledge about their habitats and plants and wholeheartedly loved nature....however Nancy's contradiction was in the "organic cow" that she was enjoying at the dinner table. What about the cow? Did she not love the cow?? Why did Nancy feel that it was ok to eat the 'organic' cow, yet worried that a little tortoise would not be able to cross a new busy road?
I am not judging Nancy here folks, but merely pointing out how unconscious animal loving humans can be. This is what our beautiful cows, pigs, chickens, goats and every so called "edible" factory or organically farmed animal are up against. People who clearly love animals and want to protect them yet also see it as ok to eat them!
I wanted to point this out to my new friend, and ask her if she knew about the environmental devastation that the meat industry is causing to our beautiful planet that she works so consciously to protect. I wanted to ask her thoughts on land degradation, water and crop wastage, I wanted her opinion on the 60% of world grain we feed to the billions of animals that could be distributed to end world hunger, and that causes deadly methane gases once digested in the billions of animals to heat up our earth...and what did she think about the billions of animals that humans breed to kill for their palates when we don't even need any meats for human survival?..... However I was sitting at a table with solicitors and an environmental scientist, and I felt my humble opinion would be shot down and their 'organic' cow dinner ruined with thoughts of guilt and judgements....and that is not what I wanted as I simply love people....yet it made me think, can intelligence sometimes be a hindrance? Surely the intellect of the 'educated' citizens of the world can be infused with the ethical dilemna of an abboitor, organic or factory? What if we tied people to the "kind organic abboitor fence" on a busy day to look at the fear in the animal's eyes that were being killed for their palates? Would they still say,"Oh, but it's evolution, it's nature, we were meant to eat meat?" Or would they buy a vegan cookbook and change their shopping list, no questions asked?
I am sure this is not a feel good story to write about this week...however I sometimes feel so helpless for the animals like no-one is listening! Sometimes I just want to just hide away from everyone. That piece of 'organic cow" at the dinner table I found myself at really upset me as I don't put myself in positions like that anymore! The company were beautiful good people, who have been programmed to tune out to the cruel practise of animal farming. We have evolved as humans to have other animal friendly protein products that are easily accessible at our fingertips, and there are enough vegans and vegetarians in society to demonstrate it is humanly possilbe. However evolution can sometimes feel like a terrible slow motion movie!
So I am going to end this blog this week with a beautiful organic vegetable soup, close my eyes and dream of a humane conscious world, with no fear or war among ourselves or our beautiful animals, and vegan dinner parties everywhere!
