Green & Gorgeous Home

VeganEra  In our household the bathtub only gets a good scrub if you actually want to have a bath… so as I scrubbed away with my trusty powder Ajax and cloth, watching as the tub miraculously turned to a bright white almost instantly, I thought I’d check the ingredients. Woops, that’s right, they don’t have to list any of the ingredients on cleaning
products. There was a poison warning on the side of the tin though, “Keep Away From Children. Contains Bleach.”

I have a feeling bleach is not the best substance to be soaking myself in.  Not to mention the rest of the elusive ingredients.  So, with the desire to never bathe myself in bleach again, I was inspired to find out how to make my own, non-toxic cleaning products for a Green and Gorgeous Home!

All you need to make a whole bunch of cleaning products is:
Baking Soda
Washing Soda
Water
Tea Tree Oil
White vinegar
Liquid detergent (I just used some Natural Instincts detergent that I have for cleaning the dishes)
Some spray bottles

The Bathtub
½ cup baking soda
Water
To make a creamy soft scrubbing mixture perfect for cleaning the bathtub, simply pour the baking soda into a bowl and add enough liquid detergent to make a texture like frostings.  Use a sponge or cloth to wipe the mixture onto the surface and then rinse.  Simple!

Window Cleaner
¼- ½ tsp liquid detergent
2 tbsp vinegar
2 cups of water
Mix these ingredients in a spray bottle and voila!

All-purpose Spray Cleaner
½ tsp washing soda
A dash of liquid detergent
2 cups hot tap water
Shake all ingredients in a spray bottle until the washing soda has dissolved.

Mould Killer
2 tsp tea tree oil
2 cups water
Combine the oil and water in a spray bottle, shake to blend and spray on problem areas.  Do not rinse.

Oven Cleaner
1 cup or more baking soda
Water
Sprinkle water generously over the bottom of the oven and then cover the area in baking soda until it is completely white.  Sprinkle some more water on top.  Leave this mixture to work it’s magic over night and you will find the grime much easier to remove in the morning with a little detergent.

Air Freshener
Placing small dishes with baking soda and some lemon juice will absorb odours around the house.

White vinegar is also a great deodorizer (once the smell dissipates after a couple of hours) and a strong disinfectant.  It is great for cleaning the toilet rim and even for spraying on your kitchen cutting board at night to kill any bacteria while you sleep.

All of these cleaning products will help to keep chemicals and toxins out of your home and out of the waterways.  Making these products instead of buying commercial cleaners will also save you heaps of money.  Happy cleaning!
