Mexican Actress Salma Heyak is the latest Hollywood advocate of the juice cleanse. After doing cleanses herself for over 10 years with custom juices made and flown into her by her friend Eric Helms, she has now launched a line of organic, hydraulically pressed juices called Cooler Cleanse.
Hayek decided to go into
business with her friend Helms after stepping up her juice cleanse just before her wedding. Cleanses are three or five days and they also offer a raw food option where the meals are created by Matteo Silverman, the chef behind the underground supper club 4 Course Vegan in New York.
Unfortunately, to participate in this particular cleanse you would need to be a) wealthy, as they charge $58 a day for juices and b) living in the US as they are prepared fresh overnight and delivered to clients at 6am in the morning.
However, if you are capable of using a juicer yourself, you can definitely do your own juice cleanse. So, what exactly is a juice cleanse?
It is a short, functional program of cutting food intake while upping the supply of vital enzymes and vitamins through vegetable and fruit juices. The idea behind this is that it gives the body the time and the nutritional support it requires to carry out deeper detoxification and healing than it can on a daily basis (when it is too busy trying to process all that food).
In fact, by cutting out solid foods you are freeing up to 80% of your body’s energy to focus on other things, such as healing and removing toxins. The body sheds excess, creating energy as it restores clarity and radiance.
The Cooler Cleanse program works by replacing your three regular meals with six juices and they recommend drinking plenty of water. You cut out all snacks and stimulants such as caffeine and you try to get plenty of rest as your body detoxifies. Some of their juices include a carrot, beetroot, apple and lemon juice and a lemon, lime, cayenne pepper, raw agave nectar and filtered water juice.
Before you undertake any type of juice cleanse it is important to ease your body into it by eating mostly raw, unprocessed foods for, at the very least, a few days leading up to it. If you don’t do this, your body will go into even more of a shock when you stop eating solid foods and the side effects could be quite unpleasant.
You should also transition out of the juice cleanse eating similar foods – mainly raw fruit and veggies.
If you feel like you need a holiday where everything is done for you and you come back feeling unbelievably refreshed and cleansed, then another option is to visit somewhere like The Spa Resorts in Thailand (www.thesparesorts.net). They do everything for you and simply give you a timetable to adhere to. In between taking juices you can spend time by the pool, get a massage or visit the steam room. Bliss.
