Vegan Era  'Don't eat anything your great grandmother wouldn't recognise as food' 'Imagine your great grandmother at your side as you roll down the aisles. You're standing together in front of the dairy case (I know I know- it is a hypothetical). She picks up a package of Go-gurt Portable yogurt tubes- and has no idea
what this could possibly be. Is it a food? Is it a toothpaste?

You could just tell her it is yoghurt in a squirtable form, yet if she read the ingredient list she would have every reason to doubt it was yoghurt. Sure there is some yoghurt in there, but there are also a dozen other things that aren't remotely yoghurt-like, ingredients she would fail to recognise- high-fructose corn syrup, modified corn starch, kosher gelatin, carrageenan, tricalcium phosphate, natural and artificial colours, vitamins and so forth. Then you read the whole other ingredient list for the 'berry bubblegum bash' flavouring, containing everything but berries or bubblegum' How did yoghurt, which in your great grandmothers day consist simply of milk inoculated with a bacterial culture, ever get to be so complicated?

Oh and don't think you are safe if you don't eat yoghurt- there are hundreds of foodish products in the supermarket that your ancestors wouldn't recognise. And yes, this does include products that are free from animal products.

Next time you are shopping, read the ingredients. if you cannot pronounce, or spell the ingredient list, or aren't sure where one, some or all of the ingredients are derived from- don't buy it.
In fact, some of the best foods won't have an ingredient list. Because they are sitting quielty in the fruit and vegetable section- unpackaged, without any health claims and free from artificial and chemical additives. Well...somewhat free of chemical and artificial additives... if they are organic. But that is a whole other story....

If all this nutrient-searching sounds to hard go out and pick yourself up a copy of the book:

Until next time, enjoy shopping with your Granny :) x
